Caring for your garage doors

Regular maintenance will prolong the life of your garage doors. Access Garage Doors products are made to the highest quality standards with the finest materials, making AGD garage doors exceptionally durable and easy to care for.

Once you have invested in a quality garage door, it makes sense to keep it in optimal condition. This will ensure that your garage door looks its best and prevents any problems.

"A garage door is an investment that can have a large impact on your home's appeal. But that shouldn't mean you have to spend hours looking after it", insists Derek Searancke of Access Garage Doors. "That's why our philosophy is to offer customers the best styles without compromising on quality."

Preserving visual appeal
Because garage doors are so visible, homeowners and businesses will sometimes choose to refurbish or alter their garage doors for purely cosmetics reasons.

If you choose to make cosmetic changes to your garage door, be sure to check that the products you use won't affect the functioning of the door and are appropriate for the garage door material.

As always, check that that these alterations won't compromise your warranty.

Garage door maintenance
Lubricate moving parts with a recommended product, according to the manufactures directions. Certain plastic parts should not be lubricated, so make sure you follow the instructions.

Minor fissures or chips that do no affect the structural integrity of the door can be caulked or painted, provided this does not affect your warranty.

If there are cracks or tears in important parts, like springs and hinges, these will probably need to be replaced. Do not attempt to replace these parts yourself, as doing so will usually void your warranty and, more importantly, is dangerous. The springs are under high pressure, so they should only be replaced by experienced professionals.

If the seal is damaged, it should be replaced.

Always call a repair team who use high quality parts. There is no point in replacing damaged components with inferior quality products that will damage your garage door's durability.

Does your garage door need maintenance?
The most basic step to determine whether your garage door needs maintenance is to examine the door, the motor and the components. Check these parts regularly so that you will notice any changes.

Some garage doors are susceptible to changes in weather. Poor quality wood is particularly vulnerable, which is why Access Garage Doors uses an especially stable wood, so there shouldn't be any noticeable divergence on an AGD wooden door.

If the garage door falls out of alignment, the opener can get damaged over time. This won't always be noticeable, but can be detected with a simple test. Put your garage door on manual mode and open it halfway. A sectional door should stop once you release it and not drift up or down. A properly aligned tilt door will either remain in place or slowly drift down. If it slams shut, it is probably out of alignment. In such a case, call a technician.
